Golf is supposed to be difficult game to pick up. Ask the average golfer, and he will tell you that it takes years of practicing on a regular basis to play even decently. Which is why the career arc of Goddard Eisenhower senior golfer Brody Scafe is so impressive. Scafe, who just graduated last week, didn’t pick up clubs until he was a freshman. One year later, as a sophomore, he was playing well enough to be named all-league (AVCTL – Division II), and followed that up by repeating as ALL-AVCTL and also being named Honorable Mention All-State (5a) as a junior. Now, as a veteran, Scafe is looking to drop the “Honorable Mention.” He wants a state title. Scafe says, “One of the things I looked forward to the most (prior to the start of the golf season) was playing one last season with my friends and having one last chance to win a state championship.”
Scafe has finished in the top 10 in all but one tournament this year and looks to be in a good position to compete for that title, and the other Tiger golfers are following his lead. “As a senior with a lot of tournament experience I view myself as a bit of leader and try to help out the younger guys on the team. We have a very competitive team with a lot of depth. We’ve won 7 of our 9 tournaments, including league and regionals. I think we’re in a really good spot, and we have a lot of momentum that I hope we can continue. We are hoping to finish with a win at state.”
Another reason for Brody’s confidence is the work that he put in during the off-season: “I worked on my wedges and short game as that tended to be what limited me last year.”
As for his love of the game and his quick success, Scafe says, “I’m a very competitive person, so sports have always been something I’ve enjoyed. I haven’t been playing golf very long but instantly fell in love with it. It’s a sport where you’re always chasing perfection, but will never achieve it, which keeps me coming back for more.”
Brody is a member of Business Professionals of America, and the National Business Honors Society (NBHS). He will be playing golf at Washburn University next year with plans to major in finance.
