Goddard’s Kayla Jensen – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Visit Wichita

By Ken Hansard

Eisenhower senior golfer Kayla Jensen placed 3rd at league last year and was named 1st Team All-League in AVCTL Division II. She also placed in the top 25 at State. But Jensen is not one who is inclined to rest on her laurels. This year, she is looking for more.

Last year’s EHS squad finished first in league and qualified to play at State in Hesston. While Jensen scored well enough to move on to day two, the Tigers as a team fell just short. Jensen would like to lead the charge to change that. “As one of the Seniors this year, I am so excited to have the opportunity to be a leader, not only on the course, but with new girls who are out for the team.  Our seniors really want this year to be about team building and developing strong self-confidence for everyone.”

Jensen says that she concentrated in the off-season on playing multiple times per week, focusing on skills that she felt she needed to improve.  Specifically, Jensen “… worked on my ‘mental game’ by always looking toward the next hole as a chance to improve.”

Jensen looks at each tournament as a chance to develop and to compete against new and improved competition from different schools. Jensen’s preparation appears to be paying dividends, “Last year, I shot my low of 83 at Salina Municipal Golf Course. This season I was able to beat it with an 80 at Salina as well.”

Besides being involved in golf, Jensen also participates in Eisenhower’s Student Council, National Honor Society (NHS), and the Tiger’s Spirit Club. Her current plan is to attend cosmetology school at Eric Fisher Academy next fall.
